Thought for the day: Pinhole Lenses

A pinhole lens is about the simplest lens imaginable. It is simply a pinhole that let’s light onto the sensor (film or electronic). They have a number of surprising uses including making double or multiple exposures, tracking the Sun over the course of a day or year, observing solar eclipses, emulating very old cameras and more.

You can easily make your own:

  • Buy a lens+body cap (for Nikon Z, search Amazon for Nikon Z Front Body Cap & Rear Lens Cap Cover Fit for Nikon Z Mount). Other vendors are similar. About $8 or $9
  • Make a hole (typically drill a quarter inch or larger hole, remove the burr, and tape some aluminum cooking foil over the hole
  • With a sharp needle or pin carefully make a clean, even small hole
  • Put your new Pinhole lens on the camera and experiment for the right exposure. Due to the small lens diameter/high f/stop you will need a long exposure or higher ISO.

SlickPic was created by a group of like-minded photographers and photography-enthusiasts who wanted a service that wouldn't force them to conform to a certain style or niche, but one that would allow them the freedom to use their photos to tell whatever stories they want. They wanted a service that was capable of storing, showcasing, sharing, and displaying photos in all the different ways people use photos: some are meant just for family, some are taken for friends, and some are made for the world to see.
