Thought for the day: Is Editing a Photo Cheating?
Ansel Adams is often considered the greatest American photographer of all time. He was also a high-end concert pianist and almost selected as a career being a pianist with photography as a hobby rather than the other way round, as a professional photographer. He often said, in various forms: “The negative is the score, and the print is the performance.”
In other words, he would spend as much time, if not more, doing ‘darkroom magic’ as in taking the photographs. For one of his most famous pictures, “Moonrise over Hernandez” he spent over three decades refining the final prints until he was satisfied.
In the photo contests, I help run the most common errors are (unlevel horizons, poor cropping, poor exposure, etc.) which are trivial to fix on your phone or computer.
Your images will be much better with simple editing, and they will thank you for that.
